About Des Stuart
My Story
Desmond John Stuart, or Des was 36 years of age when he learned to play the pipes. His son wanted to play the drums and Des agreed as long as it was in a pipe band and so father and son commenced their musical journey, initially joining Redcliffe Pipe Band.
Des had the honour of being the oldest learner in the band but his perseverance paid off when he was issued with a band uniform. His first occasion to march with the band was to carry their flag on ANZAC Day.

Draping his kilt over the back seat of the car to get to the march, Des had to cross the Hornibrook Highway toll bridge. As Des stopped to pay the 2 shilling toll, the toll collector saw the kilt and waived Des through without paying.
Des never paid a toll again. Eventually all of Des’ family joined and played in the Redcliffe Pipe Band.

Clan Stuart Pipe Band started in 1999 and Des became a member. At one practice the then Pipe Major of the Pipes & Drums, National Servicemen’s Memorial Band, (P&DNSMB), John Arnfield, walked in and asked if any Clan Stuart’s pipers would join them to travel to Canberra and participate in the commemorations for the 60th Anniversary of the formation of National Service.

Eight pipers, including Des, then joined the P&DNSMB’s 40 pipers and drummers and traveled to Canberra. After the event Des went to return his loaned P&DNSMB uniform and the Pipe Major said, “Keep it”.
Since then Des has continued to perform with the P&DNSMB. Over the years Des has had the distinction of performing with the ‘Nashos Band’ at a wide range of events including major parades and military ceremonies including four trips to Noumea.
Des has enjoyed his time at the ‘Nashos Band’ and he counts every member as a friend. “Good Friends and everyone liking pipes & drums – what more could you ask for?”
